Best Residential Deadbolts (2026)

Ranked deadbolts by bolt throw, ANSI grade, and cylinder class — not feature lists. Canadian retail availability, locksport caveats, Quebec install notes.

How we ranked

The rankings were built on three criteria, in order, rather than on feature counts:

  1. Bolt throw of 25 mm (1 inch) or more — the minimum that resists a pry attack without the frame failing first.
  2. ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 or Grade 2 — tested cycle durability and strike resistance[1].
  3. Anti-pick cylinder — by design (security pins, sidebars) or validated by independent locksport testing.

Smart features served as a tiebreaker rather than a primary criterion. The deadbolt guide explains what each specification means in practice.

The most common mistake

Upgrading the lock while leaving the factory strike plate in place. The strike plate, and specifically its short screws, is where most residential doors fail. Any deadbolt on this list paired with a reinforced strike plate and 3-inch screws substantially changes the threat profile of the home, at a total cost under $120 CAD.
