Best Smart Deadbolts (2026)

Ranked smart locks by mechanical body grade, backup cylinder class, and Canadian availability — not app features. Quebec winter battery notes.

How we ranked

Smart locks earn their rank on the mechanical side first, then on the electronic layer.

The criteria were:

  1. Mechanical deadbolt grade — ANSI Grade 1 or Grade 2, rather than vague "commercial grade" marketing language.
  2. Bolt throw — 25 mm (1 inch) minimum.
  3. Backup cylinder class — assessed against locksport community findings rather than manufacturer claims.
  4. Canadian availability and cold-weather battery performance — relevant for Quebec winters.
  5. Protocol and ecosystem — Wi-Fi, Matter, and Z-Wave preferred, with no proprietary hub required.

Smart locks with weak backup cylinders flagged as caution items by locksport communities, and products without Canadian distribution, were excluded.

The right order

Add a smart deadbolt after the mechanical side is in place:

  1. Reinforced strike plate first.
  2. Grade 1 or Grade 2 deadbolt body.
  3. Smart features on top.

A smart lock installed on a weak frame with a thin strike plate is a convenience upgrade rather than a security upgrade. The smart deadbolt guide covers the full analysis.
